Is This A Fun Time To Be In PR? Guess It Depends On Where You Live, Work

Mike Manuel wrote an interesting post the other day, titled "It's a fun time to be in PR."

Mike's a tech PR guy, someone who works on the front lines of the new communications frontier, where "blogging" and "RSS" and "podcasting" are ways of life, not selected words from a Star Trek script.

He writes:

"Maybe it’s just something unique to the Valley right now ... but my gut tells me it’s bigger and broader than this ... I see people from all corners of an organization showing a heightened interest in the communications process – especially the execs."

That's awesome, and a welcome change from the "old days."

But I don't think the transition is industry-wide. There's still a great deal about our profession that is stuck in the past. And a great number of practioners who are focused on all the wrong things.

Just yesterday I was asked how much I would charge for sending out a release and making follow-up phone calls to the media.

And I still hear horror stories from agency pros about billing issues, ridiculous pitches they're forced to make and more.

The tech PR industry is leading the way and for pros like Mike, there's a light at the end of the tunnel.

For the rest of us in "red state" land, it's still the 1970s ... without the good music.
