My college buddy John Lopez -- a long-time Houston Chronicle sports columnist -- has joined the list of Chron staffers blogging.

John's a great columnist and one of the best writers I've ever worked with.

His blog is called Lopez at Large, with an @ sign that blogger reads as a mail address, so I've spelled it out.

In his first post, John describes a piece of sports memorabilia that I covet, a game-used soccer ball that Landon Donovan kicked into the stands after the United States defeated Mexico to make it to the World Cup semifinals back in 2002:

"Landon Donovan kicked the ball into the stands after the win. It came right at me and I snagged it. I was going to throw it back onto the field, but a U.S. Soccer official said, 'Keep it. Put it on a shelf in your office.' And that's where it is."

John, I'll help promote your blog if you'll let me have that piece of soccer history. :)
