Ego -- It Gets In The Way, But PR People Are Experienced At Stepping Around It
In recent weeks, I've had negative experiences with two people who let their egos rule their actions in business or personal situations.
Both situations required me to "be the bigger person," as it were, and go along in order to keep harmony.
The older I get, the more I hate doing that. :)
A colleague made the observation to me that as communications professionals, we often have to deal with oversized egos -- clients, executives, sources we need for information, etc. So we develop a capacity for acceptance that would be painful to others.
She's right. You don't get far in our profession if you can't take criticism, correction and constant rewriting.
So we're perhaps better equipped to handle these difficult situations than some. We're adept at messaging, at communicating effectively, at diffusing tense environments.
And unfortunately, we're experienced at sucking up and doing what's necessary to get the job done.
But that doesn't make it any easier.
