Attention, Transparent Generation -- that college party pic might just keep you from getting hired

When I was at Bates Southwest, I was responsible for all our hiring -- from interns on up. And I often spoke on campus about getting a job in PR, etc.

I loved to regale the crowd with examples of young people who had screwed up their chances of getting a job -- usually due to silly stuff like using racy e-mail addresses or putting their cell numbers on their resumes, and then answering my call while they were shopping at Target or jamming to blaring rap tunes.

But that was nothing compared to what today's college students -- the Transparent Generation, PR blogger Steve Silvers calls them -- face when they go job-hunting (click here for the full post):

"... many ... are waking up to a nagging concern about their online trail of screw-the-establishment web sites, embarrassing party photos, gushy poetry blogs and message board diatribes - all created way before they ever thought they might be Googled by a potential boss."

Steve reminds young people -- and all of us, really -- that you are what you post. It's an excellent message and a must-read for teens and college students.
