Does podcasting blow? It depends on who's listening ... or not
I seem to be developing quite a bit of a contrarian streak here in recent weeks. Not sure why ... perhaps it's the "grumpy old man" syndrome.
So I had to laugh when I read this posting on Valleywag titled "Why podcasting blows." Sounds like something I might write!
I must admit, I've never really understood the attraction of listening to someone talk for 45 minutes, but I know that's just me. Some people love podcasts, and that's what's important.
Remember that we've entered a time when reaching a small audience that cares is often more important than reaching millions who don't.
If a podcast gets you to your core customer, then it's a great vehicle. Use it!
The problem with tools such as blogging or podcasting is that some folks immediately try to turn them into cash cows. They get all fired up thinking they can get rich, and their focus turns to promoting the tool, versus providing content.
If you're producing information that is meaningful to your audience, who knows what can happen? You may indeed strike it rich.
But if all you're worried about is how you can make a buck, you're likely to wind up with a burst bubble.
