A blog is a blog, a post is not a blog, and a commenter is not a blogger

I'm not usually one for being snooty about blogging, especially when it comes to newbies.

But I find the misuse of simple terminology spreading as blogs reach a larger audience -- check out the numerous (and often incorrect) uses of the terms "bloggers" and "blogs" here in this Houston Chronicle sports blog.

Perhaps it's time for a refresher?

* A blog is the entire entity -- all the posts, all the comments, etc. In the example above, the blog is called "NFL" and it contains today's posts, previous posts, archives, comments and so on.

* The blogger is the person responsible for the blog, or its author. Again, in the example above, Chronicle sports writer John McClain is the blogger. Some blogs have multiple authors.

* A single entry to a blog is called a post. It's not a blog.

* A comment left by a reader is just that ... a comment. It's not a blog, and the commenter is not a blogger.

Hope that helps.
