Sports writers at the small-town Texas daily I worked at after college would take turns staffing the office on fall Friday nights, while their colleagues were out covering high school football.

Before my first "in-office" stint, the boss told me to be prepared -- the phone would ring off the hook with local chemical plant workers on the night shift calling in for scores.

I couldn't believe anyone could care so much about high school football but of course he was right ... I spent the entire night fielding calls from people anxious to hear how the "local boys" were faring.

Such is "Friday Night Fever" in small-town Texas. Down 42-17 with just 2:42 left, Plano East recovers one onside kickoff after another to claw its way back.
